In fact, we created a class of our own.
When you look around at the various HIIT-style workouts in Charlotte, you’ll notice a few variations that are consistently repeated:
The cardio machine + dumbbell routine. Popularized by studios like Orangetheory Fitness, Barry’s and Eat the Frog Fitness - this model of run/row/bike for a period of time + paired with hit the floor for repetitive dumbbell and bodyweight circuits has become an overused go-to. These studios have become indistinguishable from each other - except for their colored lights - do you prefer orange, red, or green?
Lift too heavy + fast, unnecessarily intense, competition style workouts. Glamorized by the CrossFit movement, these workouts and their effort to turn every day into a bragging competition have proven to drive large crowds into grungy warehouses and, unfortunately, physical therapist offices. Who needs a rotator cuff anyway?
The minimal equipment, bodyweight boot camps. Often located outdoors where equipment is scarce, the traditional boot camp workout is a safe go-to for those getting started on their fitness journey, but quickly becomes mundane due to lack of variety in the exercises. Does burpees in the itchy-grass sound like infinite fun? I’m going to guess, no.
To be clear, we are not dismissing any of these workout styles. In fact, we believe that any movement in your life is a step in the right direction. Our goal with this blog is to further breakdown Urban MVMNTs’ workout model and how it’s created its own niche amongst a sea of sweat-filled programs here in CLT.
You can have your cake and eat it too.
Most people don’t realize that before opening the doors to Urban MVMNT in 2017, we owned one of the largest CrossFit gyms in Charlotte for over 7 years. While that workout style served us as a business very well, we were fastly realizing that there was a more effective + safer way to give our clients probably the best workout in CLT.
We knew people wanted to be strong. They would love to do pullups and lift barbells (safely) and push sleds and do all the things that strong people can do.
But we also realized they wanted to be lean and have endurance. When not in the gym members want the needed endurance to mountain bike at the USNWC, sign up for a local CLT 5K (even if just for the free beer) or avoid getting winded walking up the apartment stairs to the 7th floor.
So we decided to be bold and create a class of our own in the fitness scene - a program that fills the ‘white space’ between the intimidating lifting and cardio-intensive workout models. The result: a routine that has quickly spread as ‘PROBABLY THE BEST WORKOUT IN CLT’.
Creating simple strength training that works.
Our first challenge in creating a truly unique fitness offering was to remove the intimidating and injury-based taboo that most people associate with strength training. By hand-selecting exercises that were simple, but still allowed for maximal results - we found that sweet spot.
The movements and resistance training equipment we utilize in our LIFT portion of our LIFT+MOVE class is designed to strengthen all the body parts you want to see improvement in and does so in a time-efficient manner.
We opted to focus on basic movement patterns (push, pull, lunge, squat, bend, etc) and tempo-based training (slow+and steady reps, instead of fast + janky - see our previous blog on this) to increase the muscle-building + fat burning effect of our program.
Suffice to say, it’s super well received by our members, and first-timers to our workout all seem to land on the same emphatic commentary: “Damn. I was nervous at first, but now I’m looking forward to getting stronger! When can I come back?”
Cardio that doesn’t get boring.
The number one reason somebody joins Urban MVMNT?
“I was getting bored at my other studio/gym.”
Here’s the thing, doing the same fitness routine over and over and over can be beneficial for you. It allows you to benchmark your progress and stay consistent in your training efforts.
But let’s face it. It’s can also be lacking creativity and thus, lacks that excitement and butterfly feeling you get when you see a workout you’ve never done before and you think to yourself - “WTF?!? That looks horrible awesome!
We created three distinct feels to the MOVE segment of our class so that each workout felt completely different from previous workouts. Let’s face it - every studio can switch up the exercises, that’s the easy part. The real challenge is making sure the workouts have a vibe and style to them that is unique.
SPRINT, BUILD and GRIND were created with that exact idea in mind and we wrote about them extensively in this previous blog. So every day when you step foot on the workout floor at Urban MVMNT, you’ll be faced with a different speed and challenge to your cardio that is designed so you can leave it all out on the floor but walk out the door already craving more.
Dedicated recovery + high-class hospitality.
Lastly, we looked around at the status-quo HIIT workout and realized they all got your real sweaty, real quick - but never focused on a proper cool-down or deep stretch component.
So we’ve installed dedicated time at the end of every class to properly return your heart rate and breathing to a ready state, mix in some deep stretch to help avoid injury and tightness and then hit you with a cold, tea-tree scented spa towel.
Sound nice, right? Trust...it is.
Our goal is to have you feeling better walking out than when you walked in, to look forward to the next workout, and have full confidence that you’ve finally found a complete workout that does it all.
